国 甲骨文国与或同为一字，象持戈守卫国土之形。《说文》注：“邦也。从囗，从或。”甲骨文及早期金文只作“或”，以戈护卫“囗”。“或”字借用为或者之“或”，国字加“囗”作外围，专指国家。（据考，宋代改写作国。）国即国家，亦指代表国家形象之事物，如国土、国旗、国徽、国民、国风等。
