辛   甲骨文象曲刀之形，状如圆凿，是古代实施黥刑之刑具。《说文》注：“辛，罪也。辛承庚，象人股。”辛义为罪。借指悲伤、辛苦、困难。辛为天干第八位。

幸   甲骨文象刑具手梏之形。本义为执。《说文》注： “吉而免凶也。从屰，从夭。”幸义为吉而免凶。又指意外地得到好处。引申幸运、幸福、侥幸、欣喜、高兴等。美化帝王之行动，称巡幸、临幸、宠幸等。
