鹿 甲骨文象鹿子之形，并特别突出头上分岔之鹿角。《说文》注：“兽也。象头、角、四足之形。鸟、鹿足相似，从匕。”鹿为兽，是鹿科动物之统称。雄鹿头上有角，四肢细长，听觉、嗅觉灵敏，性温驯，善奔跑。打猎常以鹿为追逐对象，故以逐鹿中原比喻夺取政权。
