这本书叫《精选象形文字通释》，之所以叫精选，是因为它没有把所有的象形文字通通列入，而是选择其中与当前生产生活相关的常用文字，放弃已不常用的那部分。通释既指通俗解释，也指将所选文字的含义从古至今拉通解释，以便使学习汉语的读者能全面理解。书中所选的文字，一是中国的甲骨文，二是纳西族的东巴文。东巴文几乎全部列入，共2000余字。甲骨文选列了1200多个。东巴文是当今遗存下来的世界极其典型的象形文字，已被联合国教科文组织列入世界记忆遗产名录。甲骨文当然也是象形文字。
有的学者认为甲骨文不能叫做象形文字，他们说象形文字在甲骨文中只占20%多的比例。其实中国的甲骨文就是象形文字。因为在甲骨文中除20%几的单一的象形字以外，指事字也是象形文字，比如“刃”以刀象形，刀口上打一点，指示它就是刀上的刃口部分。会意字是由两个或两个以上的象形符号组成的字，它是复合的象形文字。形声字是象形符号与声音合组而成的字，他的另一半或者说是它的基本要素仍然是象形文字。
象形文字的使用在世界上除中国以外，还有埃及的象形文字。在中国国内除纳西族的东巴文和汉字的甲骨文以外，还有贵州的水族的象形文字。不过，埃及的象形文字现在保存下来的很不完整，水族的象形文字目前发现的只有800多字。因此，这本书只列入了中国的甲骨文和云南纳西族的东巴文。
对象形文字的研究，不单是一个学术性问题，而且是继承祖国文化传统，促进世界各民族语言交流的重要课题，更是推动文化交流与融合的一个窗口。我希望这本书的出版能在这方面起到微小的推动作用。由于个人水平有限，缺点和错误在所难免，敬盼读者及专家批评指正。
